June is the month Hampton Roads really hits its stride. The weather is warm, the waterfront is alive, and the event calendar fills up fast. I've been living and working in this region for over 20 years, and I still look forward to June every single year. Here's a look at what's worth knowing about this month — whether you're a longtime local or just getting settled here.
Festivals & Big Events
• Blackbeard Pirate Festival — June 12–14, Hampton Waterfront: This one is a genuine Hampton Roads original. The Hampton waterfront transforms into an 18th-century seaport complete with costumed re-enactors, cannon fire, and ship battles on the water. It draws visitors from all over the country, and honestly, it never gets old — the energy down there is something else.
• Norfolk Harborfest / Sail250 Virginia — June 19–23, Town Point Park, Norfolk: Harborfest is already one of the biggest waterfront festivals in the region, and this year it's tied to the Sail250 Virginia celebration marking 250 years of American independence. Expect tall ships, a Parade of Sail, live music, fireworks, and a whole lot of maritime pageantry along the downtown Norfolk waterfront. This is a must if you have kids — or if you just love a good show on the water.
• 56th Annual Hampton Jazz & Music Festival — June 26–28, Hampton Coliseum: Fifty-six years in and this festival is still one of the premier jazz events on the East Coast. Jazz, R&B, and soul acts fill the Coliseum over a full weekend, drawing music lovers from across the region and well beyond. If you've never been, this is the year to fix that.
• Virginia Arts Festival — June 12 and additional dates, Perry Pavilion, Norfolk: The Virginia Arts Festival brings some genuinely special programming this month, including a solo evening with mandolinist and singer Chris Thile, and a Top Gun: Maverick In Concert screening with live orchestral accompaniment. Tickets are required, and these shows tend to sell — worth planning ahead.
• Point Break Festival — Around June 19–22, Virginia Beach: A multi-day music and arts festival coming to Virginia Beach — full lineup and venue details are still being confirmed, so keep an eye on their announcements. The concept is exciting and the timing is perfect for a summer weekend out.
Live Music & Concerts
The Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater in Virginia Beach is loaded this month — it really is one of the best outdoor concert venues anywhere on the East Coast.
• Dave Matthews Band — June 6: A summer night at an outdoor amphitheater with Dave Matthews Band is about as good as it gets. Grab tickets early.
• Jelly Roll – The Little Ass Shed Tour — June 10: Jelly Roll's blend of country, rock, and rap has built one of the most passionate fanbases in music right now. High-energy night, no question.
• HARDY: THE COUNTRY! COUNTRY! TOUR! — June 12: HARDY is one of country music's most exciting live acts. Rowdy, loud, and a whole lot of fun.
• Hank Williams Jr. — June 19: A true American icon. If you've never seen Bocephus live, this is your chance. Classic hits, Southern rock energy, and a crowd that'll be singing every word.
Juneteenth & Cultural Celebrations
June is rich with community and cultural events this month, and I think it's worth highlighting all of them.
• Norfolk Juneteenth Freedom Fest — Date TBD, Town Point Park, Norfolk: A waterfront celebration honoring Juneteenth with live music, cultural vendors, fireworks, and tributes to African American heritage. A meaningful community gathering open to everyone.
• Newport News Juneteenth Celebration — June 20, 5–10 PM, Victory Landing Park, Newport News: Free and open to the public, this celebration features performers and community programming in a beautiful waterfront park setting. A great evening out for the whole family.
• Hampton Roads Black Expo — June 20, venue TBD: A vendor and business networking event celebrating Black entrepreneurship across the region. Whether you're a business owner looking to connect or a community member looking to support local, this is worth your time.
• 2nd Annual Hampton Roads Black Food Festival — June 27, Mount Trashmore Park, Virginia Beach: Back for its second year, this festival celebrates Black chefs and food entrepreneurs with vendors, dishes to sample, and a family-friendly atmosphere at one of Virginia Beach's most beloved parks. Put it on the calendar.
• Norfolk Pridefest — Date TBD, Downtown Norfolk: Norfolk's annual LGBTQ+ pride block party is a welcoming, festive community celebration with live entertainment and vendors. All are welcome.
• Dashiki and Daiquiris Networking Event — June 16, Hilton Garden Inn, Virginia Beach: A fun adult networking double-header — wear your dashiki, bring your business cards, and enjoy the community vibe. A nice change of pace from the typical networking event.
Farmers Markets & Local Finds
• Hampton Roads Farmers Markets — Every week throughout June, locations across Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton, Newport News, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Portsmouth: The regional farmers market network is in full summer swing this month. Fresh local produce, handmade goods, live music, and a chance to connect with the people who grow and make things in this community. Check your city's parks and rec page for specific days and locations.
• Roots & Rhythm Marketplace — Date TBD, Newport News: Organized by Newport News Parks & Recreation, this community marketplace brings together local vendors, artisans, and performers for a festive afternoon. A good one to watch for on their events calendar.

One of the things I always tell people who are thinking about making Hampton Roads home is that there is always something happening here — and June is about as good an example of that as you'll find anywhere. Honestly, it's one of the things my clients love most once they settle in: this community shows up for itself, all year long. If you ever want to talk about what it's like to live here — not just visit — I'm always happy to chat.
